The Pittsburgh-to-Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway™ is a 320-mile corridor that follows the historic path of the Main Line Canal. It intends to serve as a physical and conceptual connector that improves opportunities for public access, linkage to important destinations, and economic development. It is not a single, long-distance trail for unimpeded travel. Partners throughout the 320-mile corridor rely on the expertise of the Allegheny Ridge Corporation (ARCorp) to meet many of these initial goals and to expand their vision to include new initiatives. The Greenway is divided into cluster areas that offer smaller, more workable boundaries for planning and implementation. Within these clusters are hub communities, population centers serving as gateway destinations for those exploring the Greenway.

As part of the Greenway initiative, ARCorp is launching the Main Line Canal Greenway GeoTrail. This GeoTrail will be a way to experience the Greenway in a new and unique way.

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching (pronounced geo-cashing) is a growing worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a geocache in the world, pinpoint its location using Global Positioning Technology (GPS) technology and then share the geocache's existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS device can then try to locate the geocache. A geocache is any type of container, ranging from a film canister to a metal ammo box, that is hidden anywhere.

A geocaching trail (GeoTrail) is simply a series of geocaches tied together by a common theme. There is not necessarily an itinerary, as we would think of a traditional trail, but rather a series of points of interest in a sort of self-guided goal-oriented plan.
